Newly-Named Professors

Two senior physicians at Schneider Children’s Medical Center have been awarded professorships by the Sackler Faculty of Medicine at Tel Aviv University: Prof. Liora Harel, Deputy Director of General Pediatrics Department “C” and rheumatology specialist, and Prof. Doron Gothelf, Director of Psychological Medicine Outpatient Clinics.

Prof. Liora Harel specialized in Pediatric Rheumatology at the prestigious American universities of Chicago and Stanford, where she focused her research studies on rheumatology and general pediatrics. Prof. Harel has published many articles in leading international scientific journals about the treatment of childhood arthritis and lupus, and penned two chapters in professional literature on these topics. Prof. Harel was named ‘outstanding lecturer’ by the Faculty of Medicine at Tel Aviv University.

Child psychiatrist Prof. Doron Gothelf, serves as the Chair of Schneider Children’s Research Committee and is a pioneer in the field of adolescent neurogenetics both locally and internationally. Prof. Gothelf completed his post-doctorate in the Department of Brain Research at Stanford University in the US. His studies center on children with rare genetic syndromes expressed by a wide range health problems, mental retardation and special behavioral problems. Among his findings is the identification of the gene for high-risk schizophrenia and studies concerning obesity caused by anti-psychotic drugs. Results of his research have been published in the peer-reviewed journal Nature while his studies have been funded by both Israeli and international foundations.

Currently, 28 of 224 physicians (12%-13%) at Schneider Children’s hold the title of professor. This represents the highest percentage of professors per capita among all 16 TAU-affiliated teaching hospitals.
