Medical Collaboration between Schneider Children’s and “Caritas” Children’s Hospital in Bethlehem

The “Heart Full of Stars” project was introduced recently to promote collaboration between Schneider Children’s Medical Center and Caritas Children’s Hospital in Bethlehem, which is run by the Swiss organization “Children’s Bethlehem Relief” and provides basic medical services. The special project enables doctors, nurses and social workers from Caritas to participate in training in various fields of pediatric medicine by specialists from Schneider Children’s.

The project is the brainchild of Yehuda Kassif, former Director of the Diamond and Precious Gems Exchange in Ramat Gan. Together with the support of Arad Banko, Director of the Austrian Cultural Forum at the Austrian Embassy in Tel Aviv, which is funding the program, and of Dr. Aviva Ron, Chair of the Executive Committee of the Association of Friends of Schneider Children’s, the first delegation of three professionals - a doctor and two social workers - visited Schneider Children’s in January 2008.

Cooperation between the two hospitals is based purely upon humanitarian values, without any connection to the political-national arena. This was evidenced by the positive reports of the members of the delegation, who underwent advanced training in the Institute of Endocrinology and Diabetes for two weeks. “We are very grateful to Schneider Children’s and the Austrian Embassy for allowing us to be exposed to this highly specialized hospital”, said Dr. Jamal Shamaa’. “We had an excellent experience, studied multidisciplinary approaches, and learnt of the importance in having a dietician on the team. We will certainly recommend this to the management upon our return home.”

The visitors were particularly impressed to see many Arab patients in the hospital and indicated that they all hope to return to the hospital again in the future. “Two weeks,” they said, “is definitely not enough time”. Dr. Ovdi Dagan, Deputy Director of Schneider Children’s, who is overseeing the program noted that, “at the end of the day, it is all about human relationships. We are planting small seeds and forging ties with our colleagues on the other side of the border.”

According to Prof. Joseph Press, Director of Schneider Children’s, “Schneider Children’s is the leading children’s medical center in Israel and provides broad-ranging, comprehensive, medical services. Collaboration between Schneider Children’s and Caritas Hospital in Bethlehem is another link in the chain of broad international ties with local and international medical centers, and I am proud of the welcome initiative”.
