Our staff will be pleased to give you personal attention and provide you with the appropriate service that you need. The Appointment Service is operated by personnel solely for the purpose of making appointments by telephone. The service allows you to make appointments and change prior appointments according to your convenience. Making appointments is accomplished by one telephone call to the service, without any need to take other steps, and significantly reduces waiting time by an average of two weeks. As an additional service to patients with appointments at the hospital, you will receive a personal reminder from our automated "telephone reminder" service, concerning the appointment date and the time, as well as pertinent details about forms and special preparations that may need to be done prior to treatment. What do you need to do? When you call our Outpatient Appointment Service, please give the Identity Number of the patient (child) and indicate the name of the Outpatient Department required. You will need to bring with you to the hospital the referral letter from the child's pediatrician and Form #17 (payment coverage) from your HMO. The service operates daily, Sunday-Thursday, between the hours of 08.00-16.00. The (multi-line) telephone number of the service is: 972-3-9253210-3 In all cases of uncertainty with regards to the appropriate clinic, please consult with the service personnel. Nuclear Medicine Institute Director of the Institute: Dr. Zvi Bar-Sever Head Technician: Kobi Gera In April 2002, Schneider Children's Medical Center of Israel opened a new Division for Nuclear Medicine, the first of its kind in Israel, which provides advanced nuclear medical services (scans) to children from the ages of 0 -18. The Pediatric Nuclear Medicine Unit offers a wide range of studies for every medical discipline, through the use of modern equipment and advanced testing methods. Nuclear Imaging in children demands individual adjustment of imaging techniques and a highly skilled technical staff in order to achieve images of the best diagnostic quality. Interpretation of children's scans requires a good acquaintance of the range of pediatric diseases as well as of the characteristics of scans, which derive from the normal and pathological growth and development processes. Due to these factors, separate nuclear imaging institutes for children were established over the years in children's hospitals across the United States and Western Europe, and now also in Israel. Scanning is an imaging technique, which is conducted in order to diagnose different diseases. Radiopharmaceuticals (radioactive compounds) collect selectively in organs, body tracts and tissues. A gamma camera detects the radioactivity emitted from the body and translates it via sophisticated electronic methods to an image on the computer screen. The manner in which the materials are absorbed by the body is an indication of the physiological and biochemical function of the organ, tract or tissue. This information accords the diagnosis of disease in the very early stages and sometimes represents the only evidence of the existence of disease in the body. Scans are non-invasive imaging techniques. The radiopharmaceuticals are administered, in most cases, via an intravenous injection (similar to any simple blood test), or via intravenous transfusion that is prepared in advance. Side effects resulting from the injection of the isotopes are very rare and usually mild (itchiness, rash). The level of radioactivity found in the injected materials is infinitely small and does not cause any immediate or latent side effects. The isotopes do not interfere with the activity of medications and there is no need to stop their administration unless specific instructions to the contrary are given by the referring physician. The gamma camera does not radiate the patient but rather absorbs the radioactivity that is emitted from the body and therefore there is no additional radiation when taking repeat films. It is possible to stay with the patient throughout the procedure. The length of stay in the nuclear medicine unit can extend a few hours and depends on the type of scan. In order to make the patient and his parents as comfortable as possible while in the unit, the waiting room has been equipped with a tv set, VCR and toys, while "Yeladim Shelanu" volunteers accompany the children during the scanning. The Unit is located on the 2nd Floor of the building, adjacent to the Imaging Department. Treatment in the clinic, as accepted around the world, is based on a combination of medication (without side-effects) and behavioral therapy. This combination assists in the disappearance of symptoms in the short term, and contributes to improved self-confidence and standing within the family and society. Treatment is individualized to each child and family and relates also to bladder control deficiency during the day. The method of combined treatment achieves high rates of success within a short time. The full range of services available at Schneider Children's is at the disposal of the skilled medical team in the Enuresis Clinic, such as pediatricians, psychologists, social workers, and other specialists. The combination of specialists in the fields of pediatric urology and pediatric nephrology is unique to the clinic at Schneider Children's. Bed-wetting is thought to be one of the most common phenomena in children's development. Most children are trained spontaneously between the ages of 2-4. Some 15%-25% of children still suffer from bed-wetting at the age of 5, about 15% at age 6, 6% at age 10, 2%-3% at age 12 and from age 18 and above, in some 1%-2% of the population the problem still remains unresolved. The older the child is, the greater the problem and the more difficult the resolution. The problem of bed-wetting causes most children enormous shame and prevents them from participating in social activities such as hikes or sleeping over at friends. Similarly, the problem induces diminished self-confidence, difficulties within the family circle and in their social lives. Many parents have trouble dealing with the problem and accordingly, mistakes are frequently made such as waking the child up at night or limiting drinking. The Causes of Bed-Wetting Scientific research indicates that in 90% of the cases, the causes of bed-wetting are physiological and not behavioral or psychological. Possible reasons are: Hereditary – in 75% of bed-wetters, there is a distinct connection to other family members who have suffered from the problem in the past. ADH hormone deficiency that is secreted at night; the hormone is responsible for regulating hydration of the body. Deep sleep patterns and waking up difficulties characterize bed-wetting children and adolescents.
